Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is one of the world's most important global earth science research and education centers. Scripps leads research in climate change impacts and adaptation, resilience to hazards, conservation and biodiversity, oceans and human health, national security, and innovative technology to observe the planet.

Shipboard Technical Support (STS) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography provides specialized expertise, personnel, instrumentation, and support services to scientists that use oceanographic research vessels. The Oceanographic Data Facility (ODF) is part of Shipboard Technical Support (STS). ODF personnel participate in numerous large-scale worldwide oceanographic expeditions providing reference quality data to researchers in the U.S. and abroad. These expeditions require a high level of technical expertise, extensive planning, and complicated logistical support.

Incumbent uses professional engineering concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments. Works in a specialized engineering field on a major training and/or research effort. Works on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of various factors.

While at sea, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair oceanographic equipment such as underwater electronic instrumentation, CTDs, environmental sensors, equipment frames, water sampling systems, geophysical instrumentation, vehicles, shipboard data acquisition systems, and meteorological sensors.

Load and install equipment onboard ship; stand watches underway. Assist with deploying/recovering equipment over the side.

While ashore, responsible for the design, development, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of oceanographic equipment; prepare equipment and spare components for use on oceanographic expeditions; maintain inventory of spare parts; assist in loading and installing equipment onboard ship; assist in packing and shipping equipment to foreign ports. Provide electronic support to ships in port and technical support to ships at sea via satellite. QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in electronic or mechanical engineering or equivalent combination of related experience and education.

  • Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.

  • Working knowledge necessary to independently apply principles, practices, and procedures in completing assignments.

  • Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.

  • Experience working with large instrumentation systems on research vessels, including the operation's safety aspects.

  • Ability to think independently and work in an environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED
  • Substantial knowledge and experience using electronic test equipment for maintaining, troubleshooting, and calibrating electronic equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ocean data collection theories and practices. Proficient in oceanographic sample collection and processing techniques.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on background check results.
  • Must be willing and able to participate on research cruises of up to 3 months duration, for a total of up to 6 months annually without restrictions, holidays and weekends included.
  • Must be able to travel globally without restriction.
  • Must be physically fit to carry out duties without causing undue risk to self and others.
  • Must possess a U.S. passport.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
