DESCRIPTION

The mission of the The Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI) is to lay the groundwork for the scientific foundations of the emerging discipline of data science, develop new methods and infrastructure, and train students, faculty and industry partners to use data science in ways that will allow them to solve some of the worlds most pressing problems.

HDSI has been established as an independent and innovative academic unit that works collaboratively with schools, divisions, departments, centers, students and faculty across multiple disciplines throughout the entire campus. HDSI has 16.5 Faculty FTE on board, through a headcount of more than 40 faculty with split appointments in multiple departments. This highly talented data-driven ecosystem of thought leaders is only expected to grow in the coming years.

HDSI is the administrative home for the undergraduate B.S. major and minor in Data Science, and three new graduate programs; Master of Data Science Online, MS in Data Science and PhD in Data Science. The undergraduate program has 1,000+ students across our major and minor programs, and is expected to grow to 2,100 next year. Our newly launched graduate programs is on track to have 100 graduate students (PhD and MS) in the upcoming academic year (2022-2023).

The Graduate Admissions Advisor will apply professional student services concepts and provide varied student services to students, faculty, and department / school / college management. The incumbent will work on moderately complex issues and will receive assistance on more complex issues.

The position has significant responsibility for the admissions process as it relates to Data Science and routinely prepares complex admissions reports. This position works with the HDSI business office and ensures the unit stays within budget and University guidelines. This position maintains oversight of new technologies and training pertaining to admissions.

This position serves on the the Ph.D., M.S. and Online M.S. admissions committees, has a professional level of expertise in all areas of applicant evaluation and a comprehensive knowledge of the of HDSI and Graduate Division policies and practices. The position is responsible for supporting relationships and special initiatives between schools and other educational entities for the purpose of enrollment.

Additionally, this position will work with the graduate team to represent HDSI at numerous domestic and international outreach events. This includes regular interfacing with prospective students and applicants both on and off the UCSD campus, and counseling and advising the general public, prospective applicants, parents, faculty and campus colleagues on admission-related issues. This position applies skills as a recruitment and / or admissions professional, providing substantive information on student programs for the organization or in college / school / department. They perform recruitment activities and evaluate and make determinations regarding applications for admission using established guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  2. Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.

  3. Proficient in a highly computerized environment (databases, electronic bulletin boards, e-mail, Microsoft Office and the Internet). Willing to use and leverage audio-visual technology.

  4. Demonstrated data management experience. Proven skill in developing and maintaining accurate organized records.

  5. Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

  6. Knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations to develop and enhance outreach & recruitment efforts to effectively target desired populations.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Flexible schedule to work overtime during peak periods or for special events.

  • Must be available for national and international travel for lengthy periods of time.

  • Current CA Drivers License and access to reliable transportation to attend off-site, statewide recruitment/outreach fairs, etc.
