The UC San Diego EH&S Specialist in the Radiation Safety Division works under direct supervision and will provide basic health physics support on campus and at the medical centers. Other duties may include sealed source leak tests for Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, non-sealed source inventory, dosimetry program support, radiation producing machine program support, radiation safety training program support, instrument calibration, hazardous materials event response, lab purchasing, backup for other EHS Specialists, and additional duties as assigned.

The EH&S Specialist will perform entry-level duties in the fields of industrial hygiene, ergonomics, occupational safety, environmental health, laboratory safety, pest control, environmental health (sanitation), environmental protection, hazardous materials control, hazardous waste management, fire safety, radiation safety, and emergency services, and uses basic concepts and equipment. Assists higher level EH&S Specialists. Performs tasks from detailed instructions and established procedures on typically non-complex assignments in support of professional program(s). Work is regularly reviewed for understanding of professional concepts and following defined policies and procedures.

• Occasional overtime may be required.

• Serve as EHS Response Team member. May be requested to respond back to campus to support the EHS Duty Officer in the event of an after-hours, weekend, or holiday incident involving hazardous materials and/or for services provided within the employees subject area of expertise.

• Bachelors Degree in a scientific discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and progressive experience. Basic knowledge/understanding of relevant EH&S field(s), and related regulations.

• Demonstrated knowledge of California Radiation Control Regulations and US Department of Transportation and Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations relative to the control and use of radioactive materials.

• Demonstrated knowledge of radioisotope handling techniques, including principles of external radiation dosimetry and biological uptake.

• Proven knowledge of principles and procedures for disposal of hazardous chemical, biological and radioactive materials.

• Demonstrated knowledge of current guidelines and prudent practices applying to radiation safety issues.

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the identification and evaluation of radiation safety hazards.

• Demonstrated knowledge of Broadscope Type A Radioactive Materials license issued by the University.

• Basic skills to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required. Proven knowledge of radioisotope measurements and analysis techniques using liquid scintillation, ion chambers, sodium iodide monitors, Geiger counters, etc. Ability to perform unit conversions.

• Demonstrated ability to use word-processing, spreadsheet and database software to analyze data and prepare reports and training materials.

• Skill in following basic instructions and providing input and feedback as required. Ability to use accepted professional practices to evaluate and respond to emergency situations.

• Proven knowledge in the selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Ability to wear the required appropriate level of PPE including respiratory.

• Understanding of customer service and quality performance techniques and procedures and the ability to apply them in achieving quality and customer service goals.

• Strong organizational skills to plan and prioritize work. Ability to organize and schedule tasks to complete projects effectively and efficiently. Ability to effectively and accurately maintain documents and inventory databases.

• Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and to impart health and safety information to workers of differing backgrounds. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse populations. Ability to effectively deliver pre-established training.

• DOJ/FBI and DMV background check and clearances are required prior to hire.

• Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License.

• Must be willing and able to work with Radioisotopes.

• Must be able and willing to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators, and respond to health and safety emergencies.
