UC San Diego's Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) is responsible for increasing the post-secondary eligibility of educationally/socio-economically disadvantaged students in San Diego and Imperial Counties, including increasing levels of eligibility and competitive eligibility of program participants. Historically, EAOP has been primarily tasked with disseminating information concerning college entrance requirements, providing motivational activities, as well as with identifying and tracking middle school/high school students demonstrating potential for college admittance. More recently, the mission of EAOP was altered to include a provision of in-depth academic enrichment or developmental education activities across a broad spectrum of disciplines.

Under close supervision of higher-level K-14 Academic Preparation Specialists, uses K-14 academic preparation professional concepts and practices by working with assigned sites to implement academic preparation programs. College Advisors play a key role in helping our programs meet the target number of students served per year. College Advisors will work with low-income, ethnically diverse students in a group setting. College Advisors work at an assigned school site and call students out of class to meet with them at the school site or work with students in a remote environment. The goal of college advising is to ensure students are informed of and complete the college entrance requirements.

College Advisors meet with 9th - 12th grade students to monitor coursework for A-G requirements, discuss college application process, review personal statements and engage in goal setting and planning for college admissions. Other topics discussed include: college entrance exams, financial aid, financial literacy, leadership, community service, internships and careers. College Advisors help remind students of upcoming community events and EAOP-related program activities. College Advisors may be asked to work collaboratively with other outreach programs, counselors at the school sites and other local area service providers. College Advisors will be asked to serve as role models and therefore will be expected to act with the utmost respect, diplomacy and tact when working in the community. College Advisors are responsible for frequent communication with their supervisors, especially as it pertains to their role in monitoring their student caseload.

Occasional weekends and evenings are required to participate in school and community events.

• This position works on a daily basis in the Imperial Valley and serves 5 high schools and 6 middle schools.

• Knowledge of working with a diverse student population, and sensitivity to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. Experience working with 9th - 12th grade students from diverse, low income backgrounds. Understanding of educational barriers facing low income, first generation high school students.

• Knowledge and understanding of K-14 education.

• Knowledge of higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), and the ability to explain procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives. Knowledge of college entrance requirements, especially as it relates to UC, CSU, community college and private universities. Must be able to accurately and clearly provide students information about college entrance requirements.

• Ability to read student transcripts and provide accurate feedback on course requirements. Skill in advising high school students to set goals and prioritize.

• Knowledge of academic programs, including curricula and admissions requirements at higher education institutions.

• Knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements. Knowledge with completion of financial aid applications.

• Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.

• Proven skill in public speaking and making presentations to diverse audiences. *Proven ability to work with off-campus agencies and entities to meet programming goals when appropriate.

• Proven ability to develop, implement and evaluate social, cultural, educational and community service programs that reflect the needs of a diverse student population.

• Skill in coordinating all aspects of large-scale programs for high school students and knowledge of program evaluation techniques.

• Skill in utilizing computer technology (i.e. internet, and electronic mail.) Ability to utilize basic sound equipment (microphones and CD players).

PREFERRED:

• Written and oral proficiency in Spanish.

• Must be able to pass a district background check.

• Must satisfy university COVID vaccine requirements.

• Incumbent will be a California Mandated Reporter and must sign CANRA documents.
