The Birch Aquarium Safety Specialist, under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities and in coordination with Scripps Institution of Oceanography Facilities/Safety and UC San Diego Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) departments plans, develops, implements, and administers the Aquariums safety and security programs by providing superior health, safety, and environmental management services responsively and cost-effectively. Ensure the safety and security of the Aquariums employees, volunteers, and guests, as well as the physical buildings, grounds, offsite programs, and vehicles. The Birch Aquarium Safety Specialist is the representative for the Aquarium on compliance with various regulatory agencies (i.e. Association of Zoos and Aquariums [AZA] and UC San Diego EH&S), partners with UC San Diego Police, and Fire Marshall, and is the acting Accessibility Coordinator. The Aquarium Safety Specialist has budgetary responsibility and manages the safety and security staff. Through active involvement, support and implement UCSD's sustainability efforts to foster a culture of sustainability among staff and guests. Some key responsibilities are (but are not limited to) coordination of safety data sheets, hazardous materials labeling and disposal, key and lock control management, evaluation and safety readiness and drills, and safety committee lead within and outside the department.
QUALIFICATIONSTwo years experience as a safety coordinator for a Zoo, Aquarium or other related field.
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific, engineering, or public health discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Solid, comprehensive working knowledge/understanding of a specific EH&S field, including related laws and regulations, and a general understanding of all EH&S fields. Understanding applicable local, state, and federal safety regulations and policies related to environmental health, high containment, occupational health, and research safety.
Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects. Experience and capacity to thrive under high-pressure conditions while prioritizing and organizing project workloads to meet established deadlines. Ability to manage multiple service requests and large-scale projects simultaneously while maintaining strict deadlines and requested completion timelines. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, requiring detail and accuracy.
Knowledge of the hazardous properties of chemicals and biological materials and the approved procedures for handling and disposal of them.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a safe and collaborative work environment.
Working skills in using technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.
Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary of large amounts of information, all while adapting writing styles to fit varying circumstances.
Ability to monitor and document safety-training programs.
Ability to perform and document on-site safety inspections and audits.
Proficient ability to effectively use a personal computer and basic software including: word processing, spreadsheets, and electronic mail clients. Proficiency in using databases, online tools such as Google Drive, and project/case management or tracking systems.
Ability to collect information and process for accurate and concise reporting. Proven analytical skills, including interpreting, synthesizing, and communicating information effectively to various stakeholders.
Ability to function during high-intensity, emergency response situations.
Demonstrated skill and ability in both PC & Mac environments. Must possess proficient understanding of PM tools and the Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook). Ability to use internet search tools for information retrieval. Willingness and ability to update and expand computer knowledge, skills, and abilities to respond to changing operational needs.

- Must be able and willing to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators, and respond to health and safety emergencies.
- Willing to work overtime and occasional evenings when needed.
- Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) training will be required. Must meet CANRA compliance requirements per California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act ("CANRA," Penal Code sections 11164-11174.4).
